A inizio marzo Enrico Letta è stato eletto alla segreteria del Partito Democratico. Si tratta di un evento che mi coinvolge direttamente su almeno due fronti: per l’amicizia che ci lega e per le iniziative che abbiamo portato avanti insieme in questi anni, da quando nel 2000 abbiamo iniziato a collaborare.

Molti mi hanno chiesto cosa questo nuovo incarico significherà per me e il mio percorso. In piena trasparenza per come ho sempre cercato di mantenere le mie comunicazioni negli anni, ho deciso di scriverlo qui.

A Enrico mi legano condivisione di principi, stima e affetto. Lo sostengo e lo sosterrò in questa sfida cruciale per il Paese e per il partito. Sostegno che verrà nelle modalità consentitemi dai ruoli che ricopro e mi troverò a ricoprire. 

Quando due anni fa ho deciso di non ricandidarmi al Parlamento europeo ero convinta di poter continuare a fare politica in modi diversi. Ogni nostra azione ha una valenza politica. Oggi come allora resto convinta del fatto che maturare esperienze nelle istituzioni sia molto utile quando poi ci si misura al di fuori di esse. Utile e apprezzato, come anche Enrico Letta ha ricordato nel suo primo intervento da segretario, citando i sette anni trascorsi come dean di Sciences Po.

 Per questo continuerò il percorso intrapreso dopo il mio mandato al  Parlamento europeo, rafforzando il mio impegno principalmente su tre fronti.

Novità e nuovi incarichi

1)  È stato formalizzato questa settimana l’arrivo di Romano Prodi alla guida dell’Associazione Italia-ASEAN di cui io diventerò vice presidente, oltre a rimanere segretaria generale. Non poteva esserci figura più autorevole del Presidente Prodi per proseguire il lavoro fatto da Enrico Letta in questi anni. Per me sarà un onore. Questa novità rappresenterà una stimolante occasione di strutturare ancora di più il lavoro nell’Associazione. Rafforzeremo ulteriormente i legami con una delle aree oggi più interessanti e più dinamiche al mondo.

2) La scorsa settimana è stato annunciato ufficialmente il mio ingresso nella lista dei consiglieri di amministrazione di Credit Agricole, che verranno presentati a Parigi all’assemblea del 12 maggio. Metterò a disposizione della terza banca d’Europa la mia esperienza internazionale e la competenza sui temi della diversity. 

3) Oltre ai miei impegni professionali, da alcuni mesi dedico il mio tempo a Il Cielo Itinerante. Ho fondato questa associazione ho fondato, tra le altre, con Ersilia Vaudo Scarpetta, astrofisica dell’ESA. Stiamo definendo proprio in questi giorni le tappe del tour dell’Italia, che faremo con un camioncino su cui sarà montato un telescopio. Andremo nei luoghi di maggior disagio educativo per parlare di scienza ai bambini e soprattutto alle bambine. Le più piccole sono normalmente fuori dalle connessioni, informatiche e umane e dai linguaggi digitali che sono, lo sappiamo, gli skills per il futuro. Dopo anni di azioni su fronti diversi sono sempre più convinta che niente cambia se la cultura non cambia. Cominciando, allora, da loro, dai bambini e dalle bambine. 

È attraverso questi incarichi e responsabilità che ritengo di proseguire il mio impegno politico al di fuori delle istituzioni. Per le pari opportunità, da un lato, e con lo  sguardo attento a seguire le altre attività in cui sono impegnata, prima fra tutte l’insegnamento. Cercherò inoltre di favorire lo scambio di idee e il confronto anche attraverso questa mia newsletter. Perché non c’è nulla di più forte per continuare a crescere umanamente e a migliorarsi del confronto con gli altri.

Early in March, Enrico Letta was elected at the head of Partito democratico. A news that involves me at least on two fronts. As a friend and because of the history of initiatives we have carried out together in recent years, since I began working with him in 2000.

Many have asked me what this new position means for me and my career. In full transparency, as I have always tried to maintain my communications over the years, I decided to write it here.

We share the values, principles, and mutual esteem with Enrico. I support him and will continue to do so during this crucial challenge for the country and for the party. A support that will come in the ways allowed by the roles I hold, and will hold from now on.

When I decided not to run again for a position as member of the European Parliament, I was convinced that I continue to play my role in different ways. Every action has a political impact. And like then, today I still believe that the experiences and expertises we gain in the institutions are very useful when you step outside them. Useful and appreciated, also. That is what Enrico mentioned in his first speech as secretary, remembering the seven years he spent as dean in Paris, at Scieces Po.

This is the reason why I will continue on the path I have undertaken after leaving the European Parliament. Strengthening my engagement especially on three fronts.

News and new roles

1)  This week Mr Romano Prodi has taken over Enrico Letta potion as President of Italy-ASEAN association. In this new setting I have taken the role of executive vice president, while maintaining the position of secretary general. There is no better profile to continue Enrico’s work pursued in the last 6 years. This new collaboration is an honor for me. And it represent an important and exciting opportunity to better and further develop Italy-ASEAN activity. We will further strengthen the relations with one of the most interesting and dynamic region of the world.

2) Few days ago it was officially announced that I will become a member of Credit Agricole board of directors. The list of the board will be presented on May 12th. I will contribute to the third European bank with my international experience and knowledge in the field of diversity.

3) Beside my professional engagements, since January I commit part of my time to the Il cielo Itinerante, an association I co-funded with, among the others, Ersilia Vaudo Scarpetta, an astrophysicist with ESA. We are defining the dates of our “tour” of Italy with a traveling telescope (mounted on a van). We will reach the places of great disadvantages in education. We will meet and talk about sciences to boys, but especially girls. Girls are usually kept aside from information technology and digital skills. But those are the skills of the future! After years working to address gender equality, I am convinced today as never before, that nothing changes if culture doesn’t change. Let’s start from them. From the boys and the girls!

It is through these new roles, positions and responsibilities that I want to pursue my political activity, outside the institutions. For gender equality, on one hand, and closely looking at the areas that are core to my work, both professionally and personally. Moreover, it is through teaching and through my social and personal messages, for example, that I want to continue to share ideas and discussions. I believe that there is nothing more powerful than this.
